The tendency towards self-destruction is an old story for many artists and creative types.  Call it the Jungian shadow side or the easier and quicker, albeit short-circuit path to reach higher levels of existence.  Regardless, they are two sides to the same coin.  From article: “Gifted, Talented & Addicted”  – by Douglas Eby.

“Beethoven reportedly drank wine about as often as he wrote music, and was an alcoholic, or at least problem drinker.  A number of people with exceptional abilities have used drugs and alcohol as self-medication to ease the inherent pain which is potential of that level of  sensitivity – or as a way to enhance thinking and creativity. ”
